Real & Gorgeous: The Truth About Beauty & Our Body
Tuesday, July 17, 2012; 7 pm - 8:30 pm

As parents, we face a tremendous challenge helping our teens build self – esteem and a healthy body image. They are bombarded with negative media messages daily suggesting they aren’t tall enough, thin enough or pretty enough. Alarming statistics indicate that over one-half of teenage girls and nearly one-third of teenage boys use unhealthy weight control behaviors such as skipping meals, fasting, smoking cigarettes, vomiting, and taking laxatives.

Over 27% of Ontario girls 12-18 years old were reported to be engaged in severely problematic food and weight behaviour. Eating disorders are now the third most common chronic illness in adolescent girls.

"Real...& Gorgeous" takes a close look at the limits society places on tweens and teens, and inspires each of us to look beyond appearance and get on with a more empowering life! In this upbeat presentation, Jen exposes the myths about beauty and our bodies and shares encouraging strategies for all parents. Sadly, many adults don't like their bodies. But helping tweens & teens love and accept themselves because of who they are and not what they look like will help them grow into adults who do!

Don't Stop Loving Me
Tuesday, October 2, 2012; 7 pm - 8:30 pm

Teens complain that parents nag, lecture and attempt to control their lives. Parents complain that teens do not listen and/or change annoying behaviours. Is it possible we talk too much and listen too little in our family relationships? As parents, we all wish to create a safe, strong and positive relationship with teens. In order to accomplish this we must offer messaes that demonstrate respect and a willingness to listen and negotiate. This presentation will present strategies which can influence rather than control teenagers.
